Cerebral Palsy in Children
"Cerebral Palsy
Incidence Linked to Birth Weight"
October 2, 2003
New cerebral palsy studies indicate that cerebral palsy births
are more likely to occur when children are born either too
big or too small. The study compared data from 10 European
birth registers of 4,500 children born with cerebral palsy
and found babies with a low weight for their gestational age
had a four to six time greater likelihood of having cerebral
palsy. Very large babies also had an increased risk of cerebral
palsy, or three time increased risk according to the study.
The most common cause of physical disability in children
in developed countries, cerebral palsy has no cure and causes
poor development or damage to motor areas of the brain. The
new cerebral palsy findings may better indicate which direction
studies to prevent and cure cerebral palsy should head.
